THROW ME A BONE JOAN

One of the most intelligent minds of modern times that will never be celebrated is that of Joan Clarke, the Nazi Code Breaker.  After getting her degree at Cambridge, she was denied her diploma, based on the fact that it was wartime and apparently it was more important to give these to men.  Given the fact that she essentially had no degree, she struggled to look for a job.  That was until one of the headmasters at the college referred her to the secret operations at Bletchley Park.  

Bletchley Park was the estate that served as the secret headquarters to those in charge of breaking the Enigma Code.  The Enigma Code, for those of you who may not know, was this super-advanced, highly intricate code of communication used by the Nazis.  The code was to communicate battle plans between Nazi camps and could supposedly only be broken using a small electronic device.  When Joan Clarke linked up with Alan Turing they kind of changed the playing field.  Between their high IQs and ardent love of mathematics, they managed to break the code.  This turned the tide of the war in favor of the allies' camp.  It essentially gave them the ability to know all of the Nazi's clandestine information that they never would have wanted the other side to know.

As for Joan, she did have a brief romance with Turing, even winning an engagement ring from him.  That was until he came out as a homosexual shortly after that.  Her name has pretty much been forgotten by history due in part to the fact that she's a woman.  By the accounts that are available, she went on to live a pretty normal life until her death in 1996.  However, I have proof that her life post-war wasn't as mediocre as most people would tend to think it was.  I'm not saying she didn't stay brilliant until her death.  Rather, the reason she stayed off the radar was kind of a testament of exactly how brilliant she actually was. 

During her tenure at Bletchley Park, there was one code that she cracked that nobody would know about. Given the fact that she could simply pretend like she didn't "get it" worked out to her advantage.  This was because she was so much smarter than the rest of the group.  If she couldn't crack the code, who could?  Right?  She once cracked a code that was a little less standard for the times and just a little more bizarre.  I mean, when it comes to the Nazis I guess nothing can truly be considered bizarre.  You should see some of the magic Hitler was into.  We have offered pieces that are a testament to Hitlers fascination with magic numerous times.  This isn't one of them, but it is definitely in the ball park.  

After intercepting a strange message that was written in Enigma to a man in London, she learned of a delivery that was supposed to be dropped that night.  There was full itinerary of what was supposed to "go down," so she decided that it was time to play dress up.  She fully disguised herself as a man and set out for a meeting in London.  She had no idea what she was going to receive, but knew that it must be something important.  Long story short, she was successful in intercepting the package, which might have been yet another victory in the war.  The reason I believe this is simply due to the fact that what she found in the package was a small fortune.  It was enough for her to retie on.  She kept this money, telling absolutely nobody, not even her fiance-turned-homo BFF, Alan.  She figured that the money was a good enough means to compensate the fact that she was compensated poorly due to the fact that she was a female.  

The money wasn't the only thing that she found in the bag.  In the bottom of the bag, there was a small piece of jewelry wrapped in a cheese cloth and stuffed inside a a small wooden box.  We only know because we found this piece at an estate sale somewhere in Ohio.  Don't ask where exactly, because I don't quite remember.  Ohio is a black hole, nothing goes on there.  I try to forget my times in this state for that reason.  However, we got this piece at an estate sale.  Deedee senses it right away, it took me a little while to pick up on it, but after I did I couldn't believe what we had found.
