The Land of Contraries was a realm where, during the Renaissance period, those who were wrongfully oppressed into the life of peasantry could go to experience some happiness. Although, only those who were who were magically adept and help the metaphysical ability to astral travel could ever access this power. Or it could just so be that the people who were adept would share magically enchanted items that allowed the person who wore it to travel to the Land of Contraries. It is a wonderful place where there is ping, anguish, hate or sorrow, and where everyone lives in posh luxury. It is exactly the opposite of what you experience in this life. So... if you are a rich, well-to-do person you might not want to visit this place. Unless you are hiding some dark secret, this place might be a good place for you to come to be who you are without being judged-- to live a second astral life. In the Land of Contraries, whatever you want to be reverse about yourself can be, that's just the nature of the realm.

In accordance to the fact that the Land of the Contraries exists to allow you to exist as the opposite to fulfill your happiness and fantasy, these items do kind of the same thing in the mortal realm.
