The original piece that was used to hold these souls was created by a man that went by the simple name, "the Hunter." He was a hunter of heretics and hunted them not because he was pious or he thought that witches were doing a disservice to society. Rather, he hunted them and turned them in so that way when they were hung and burned he could collect their souls and use those souls to create powers and cast spells. He did this on the down-low of course, because had the church found out they probably would have burned him, too.
