Liberator of Cuba, symbol of the struggle for independence, working-class hero: South American guerilla Che Guevara has long been an icon of the communist world. Even today his likeness is emblazoned on millions of T-shirts and posters worldwide.
However, what most people do not realize is what was only discovered decades later after secret files were released --- and that is that in the six months after his victory over the Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista, Guevara ordered 216 executions, and that is only the number of named victims!
He has not only the blood of his enemies on his hands, but also that of innocent civilians. The revolutionary established a network of labor camps where tens of thousands of people were detained.
One thing was however clear to his ally Fidel Castro: The world must never find out about this side of Che Guevara. In the fight against the capital system, Cuba -- and communism -- needed heroes.
The fact that Guevara was shot to death in 1967 worked to Castro's advantage' after all, dead heroes live longer. It wasn't until 42 years later when Cuban refugee Jacobo Machover published his book The Hidden Face of the Che that the atrocities committed by the communist bearer of hope were revealed in transcripts and testimonils from his companions.
~ Che Guevara had studied medicine and originally joined Fidel Castro as a doctor, but during the liberation of Cuba he took up arms and grew more amd more radical --- later on he had no qualms about using child soldiers.
