The Enigma of Metempsychosis -- GH

The enigma of metempsychosis is the transmigration of the soul, especially the passage after death from a human or animal  to some other human or animal  body.  It is believed the doctrine originated in Greece around the 6th Century BC.  Orpheus, founder of the Orphic religion, taught followers that the purer a life is lived, the higher the next reincarnation until one would live forever as God.  Plato believed in a finite number of souls, so birth was only a transmigration into a new body.  The concept is also popular among Eastern religions, where an individuals soul is thought to carnate from one body to another.  In classical literature, Poe, Joyce and de Maupassant all wrote about metempsychosis.
