The non-physical part of man, is the astral body. This comprises the emotional, mental, and psychic basis of the individual, and largely conforms in character an intellect to you!

Since it is neither the physical body nor the soul, but forms as it were a sheath for the soul, early spiritualists called it the perispirit, "around the spirit". Since it has characteristics both of the mortal body and of the immortal soul, it is called the mortal soul. 

Reincarnationists believe that evil actions taint the astral body, which taint is communicated to the soul, and is the cause of the soul's condition. It is thus the casual body, or karmic body, which is responsible for one's karma

Beacause it is the body that goes through the experience of death to emerge on the other side, it is the thanatic body. As the link between the body and spirit, it forms a unifying body. 

Unlike the soul, but like the etheric body, the astral is not immortal. It is a continuing body, which after death continues its existence on the next plane and goes on, along with the soul, to other fields of experience. It has sometimes been described as the containment vessel for the soul, keeping the individual integrated as he moves along the planes of progression in the course of your spiritual evolution. But eventually, after a period of many years, perhaps centuries in terms of terrestrial time, it is cast off by the soul and disintegrates
