Pythagoras of Samos wore many faces. He was Ionian Greek philosopher. He is also famous for his contributions to math and a religion sect that was named after him and calledPythagoreanism. In his youth, Pythagoras traveled the world around. He studied in Egypt and visited many other places in search of knowledge. In 530 BC, he moved to Croton in Magna Graecia. It was here that he founded his religious sect. His followers took part in the religious rites and practices that have been instilled in them by Pythagoras that he obtained by traveling the world in search of truth and wisdom. The society took an active role in politics of Croton, which did eventually lead to their downfall. People became jealous of the pure magic which Pythagoras and his followers believed. They began burning Pythagorean meeting places. Pythagoras and a string of his followers were forced out of the city amidst violence and betrayal of their own people. Pythagoras is said to have spent his last days in Metapontum.
