Tulipmania was a time of abundant wealth in the Netherlands. The country was just coming out of one of the worst depressions in European history. The flowers sold for as much as 10x the annual income of a skilled craftsman, reaching as much as $100K for one bulb!
It appears as though during the upswing of the Dutch economy the aristocrats of the empire took a certain fancy to tulips. These tulips could be seen displayed everywhere, in bright arrays. The more tulips a person had, the more prominent their family was. With such standards in play, everybody quickly developed a strong desire for these tulips.
Allow me to tell you the real reason why the Dutch aristocracy were after these bulbs. In the 1600s there was a influx of a mystic creature known as the Tulip Fairy. The Tulip Fairy is a breed of nymph that is attached specifically to the tulip flower.
