The origin of crystal skulls can tend to be a rather mysterious topic. Part of the issue arises because quartz crystal is a natural stone that comes from the Earth, therefore we cannot carbon date the crystal. The only way that science can currently estimate the age of a crystal carving is by examining its surface to see if there is any evidence showing how it was carved, and whether it shows ancient or modern tool marks, or in some cases, no marks at all.

Our present society predominantly associates skulls with death and evil. However, many ancient societies are believed to have had the opposite association, where objects like the crystal skulls represent "life": the honoring of humanity in the flesh and the embodiment of consciousness.

Rituals celebrating the deaths of ancestors have been observed by civilizations around the world for more than 2500 years. The Skull came from an intricate network of caves that are linked together by an even more elaborate network of tunnels and secret passageways. The network of caves was discovered by a nomadic caravan of traders in 2003, along with an abandoned vehicle that had, at one point, belonged to a group of tourists. All that remained was a descending opening that the group refused to enter on the basis of not wanting to get lost in the elaborate network that guards itself with ancient magic. 

You know that sometimes I get a little bit in over my head, and appropriately, I staged an exploration into the network. Upon entering I could feel the energy hanging over me like drapes hang from a window. The further down I got, I started to perspire fiercely under the sting of the elevating heat. I felt as though, at any moment, I might pass out. 

Weak in the knees, I proceeded. I had made it this far and the only way I was exiting without some sort of evidence was over my dead body, which might have been the case. I wandered further down a passageway that looped to the right. I kept on for what seemed like an eternity, until I cam to the mouth of a particularly large cave. 

I walked into the cave, unaware of anything that might happen. On the walls were inscriptions that gleamed like crystals in the sun. The luminescent glyphs were in a language that I clearly could not decipher. On the far side of the cave ran a stream that trickled down the wall and form a pool in the center of the cavern. 

I walked forward, wading into the cool water of the cavern and realized how out of place this seemed to be located in the center of the Sahara Desert. Nonetheless, it was cool and refreshing and welcomed the hydration. I was taking a drink, when I noticed a glint caught my eye from the far corner of the cavern amidst the eerie glow of the glyphs. Immediately, I started towards it, wading through the cool pool of water that never reached higher than my waist. 

When I arrived in the corner, I discovered a shrine, built for some ancient god or goddess, whom I do not recall. The shrine was beautifully ornate with solid gold and silver adornments, encrusted with rubies and diamonds and other precious jewels that I could not distinguish. The alter was formed by four solid gold posts, with cross laid cedar wood, forming a table on which an eternal purple flame was ablaze. 

Purple is the color of the majestic, appropriate for what was on display right behind the flame. On display, right behind the flame, is the original crystal skull that I am offering you. I reached out to touch the skull, and energy hit my fingertips that brought my mind to life. 

I heard a rumbling like that of a stampede of one thousand elephants. Everything became light... the glowing glyphs illuminated. They were little orbs of energies all around me. Everything thing turned white like a camera flash. Then, it was all silent. I was in a state of confusion, until I realized what was happening is that I was taken back in time by a psychic vision.

When I came out of my vision the eyes of the Crystal Skull glowed a deep blood red color and it seemed to grin in approval. Then, it returned to its original form. I took the skull, put it in my bag and headed out to the entrance. After a few hours of getting lost, I finally made it to an entrance. Not the original one through which I had entered, but it was a way out nonetheless.
